MAC Technique Class with Gregory Artl | How to be Red Carpet Ready
“I consider myself a beauty exorcist. Instead of piling makeup on the face, I bring out a woman’s beauty, respecting her features, bone structure, coloring, and most importantly, her personality.”
- Gregory Arlt
And that's what he taught us during this year's MAC Technique class held last January 18, 2014. Gregory Arlt is such a character. He is like a display of fireworks that never seems to stop. He imparts both wit and wisdom with every brush stroke and I consider it an honor to be seated in front of that class to learn from the master himself.
The lesson, the basic steps of creating a look from Day to Play.
Using his 20 years of experience, along with MAC's iconic and new released products, he was able to transform Ann into a radiant woman worthy of the red carpet. He used the simplest of techniques that are easily achievable by regular women like us. Of course with the help of MAC cosmetics. :)
Skincare:
A step usually dismissed. But for Gregory, he took this one seriously. Using softening lotion to get rid of surface dirt, he polished Anne's face. Proceeded with applying a small amount of moisturizer that fits her skin type. Then, applied a primer to prep the face in natural radiance. The result? Glowing, evened out skin tone ready for base!
Don't forget to prep your lips with MAC Lip Conditioner to moisturize it! :)
Base:
Foundation depends on your skin type. Gregory opted for a MAC Studio Moisture Cream base to even out further Anne skintone. He also softly blended concealer on to her under eyes. I could feel the feather strokes from where i was sitting as I watch him work the product on to her skin. I wished I was sitting in her place instead. He set it with one of my fave, MAC Mineralize Skin Finish.
Cheeks:
Can you believe that he didn't even contour Anne's face? He only used blush in this tutorial. MAC creates brushes that delivers the product well and with this, it clearly shows. The pigmentation is unbelievable that we were awed with how Anne's cheeks popped.
It was news for us to learn that Gregory don't do contour when it comes to red carpet looks. He let the cheeks work it's way into melding a contour that would look natural on any lighting. From the flashes of cameras of the paparazzi, to the bright ones on the stage. I must say that this is a technique, I would need to practice and perfect.
Lips:
Like a magpie, Gregory is attracted to shimmers and glitters. Dazzleglass is his favorite and he used it on Anne for this red carpet look. The shade, Bare Necessity.
Eyes:
Gregory Arlt worked on the eyes with skills of an artist. Using MAC's best-selling shadows, Rice Paper and All That Glitters, he was able to bring out Anne's eyes beautifully.
He applies highlight first using Rice Paper on to the brow bone. He then applied All That Glitter on to the inner lid. Giving the eyes immediate dimension even without contouring. He then blends the crease (without using any color!) with a clean fluffy brush (MAC 224).
Add the touch of MAC fluidline in Black Track and his favorite False Lash Extreme Black Mascara.
For the evening, he added the shadow Embark and Wedge at the edge and crease. For a big oomph, he applied #36 lashes which he says is a favorite of Dita Von Teese! :)
With skills like this, it's no wonder that Gregory Artl has his postion as Director of Makeup Artistry for MAC. He is also sought after for his Master Classes. His also known for his works on famous faces sucha s Dita Von Tease, Katy Perry, Gwen Stefani and Victoria Beckham!
So if you wanna look like a celebrity worthy of a the red carpet, take in these simple steps and enjoy applying them! Just the way Gregory Artl does!
Oh! Good news! MAC Face and Body will be available soon here in the Philippines!
