FOTN: Smokey Makeup Look + Tip and Tricks on How to Create Smokey Eyes
I made this look expecting that I'd be meeting up with girls at a club after a work meeting. Unfortunately, my efforts were in vain as my meeting ran really late. Sigh! Smokey eyes is a popular party makeup look. Smokey eyes compliment all kinds of eyes. It defines the it and makes you appear edgy and classy at the same time. . It just depends on the gradation, intensity and color placement.
But one thing will never change and the most important in creating smokey eyes is the blending. Even if you are just using a single eye shadow or more, make sure that there are no harshlines and blend it out softly. Smokey eyes are dramatic and all out so don't be afraid to bring out the colors that you choose.
I went back to the basics and used silver and black to do this smokey look. I used a satin base silver all over the lid and softly smoke it out with a matte black and add color of a bit of dark purple.
The photos shown below looks as if I'm wearing blue eyeshadow. Must be the shift of the e/s I used or my camera setting.
This is how I do an easy smokey eyes since the placements of colors are the same as I would when doing a neutral makeup but with a more intense color this time.
There are three things I don't forget to do when I do smokey eyes and I'm sure you know this as well:
1. Apply eyeliner to lids
2. Apply eyeliner on the waterlines
3. Mascara
These three steps assures that you don't look like you've been punched or out to get ready for Halloween.
The eyeliner creates definition and depth while the Mascra opens up the eyes even more. Better yet, add false lashes if you have them.
And if you want to preserve your smokey makeup look for the whole evening, don't forget to apply eye primer like Urban Decay Primer Potion.

Smokey eyes may seem a bit intimidating since it could easily make one look like a zombie out of Michael Jackson's Thriller MTV. Just remember to give your cheeks some lovin' by adding a nice pop of color similar to how to blush naturally. This would immediately make your look come alive, so to speak.
Contouring your face (if you're confident with your contouring skills) will also help veer away your smokey makeup look from looking like 2D. Adding that shadow on your jawline, cheeks and nose will define your face shape and make you look slimmer and put together.

Lips are probably the easiest when you're doing smokey look. Just remember that what ever shade you use on your cheeks, make sure it's similar to your lips. Ex. Pink blush = Pink lipstick; Coral Blush = Coral lipsticks. But with NARS Orgasm Blush, most lipstick go with it anyway.
I usually turn to cooler tone blushes when I use cool tones for my smokey eye makeup. Like for this look, I used silvers and black, so I used pink lipstick. Or go completely nude on my lipstick or just slather a lipgloss. :)
Products used for the Lips:
EOS Lip Balm
NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Milan
Additional tips are the following:
- Do your eye makeup first to prevent fall outs fixing with your eyeshadow
- Don't forget to groom your brows
- Don't apply too thick eye shadow down the waterline if you have oily lids. As the night goes by, the shadow will gravitate it self.
- If you don't have nude lipstick, mix your most neutral shade with a concealer to tone down the shade.
I wish there will be more opportunities for me to rock a look like this. How about you? When was the last time you've rocked a smokey makeup look? And if you haven't, I hope my tips and tricks will help you.
